Korean alphabet is a very scientific, straightforward system, which allows people to quickly learn to read text in Korean. Invented about 600 years ago, it helped the literacy level soar in Korea. After the World War II was over, Korea's GDP per capita was only $100 in 1963. Since then, it soared to a record-breaking $10,000 in 1995 in less than 40 years to a fully developed $25,000 in 2007. With the strong economy, the nation welcomed the inception of democracy in 1987. This lunchtime lecture will be a great opportunity for an overview of how South Korea's economy grew, especially in heavy industry and automotive industry, with the development of today's global companies such as Samsung, Hyundai, POSCO, and LG. Make your own souvenir from during this lunch workshop on Korean knotwork (maedup) and paper crafts (hanji art). There also will be an opportunity to try on Hanbok, traditional Korean garments. Heavily using silk, madeup works are used for decoration on wedding gowns, gifts, bookmarks and other applications. Hanji uses paper made from the mulched bark of the Mulberry tree to create boxes, small chests, lanterns, and other artistic items. Light refreshments will be served. |

Day Trip to Gaeseong, North Korea

Gaeseong, which was the capital of the Goryeo Dynasty (2) and is currently home to a budding industrial complex that is fueling economic cooperation between the two Koreas. About 50 South Korean companies have set up factories in the industrial complex that mainly produces clothing, shoes, industrial parts, cookware and watches. This will be a very unique, precious opportunity to visit one of the countries that still remain close-door (Booking deadline: End of May 2008).
