The following programs will take place throughout the week to contribute to one of the most memorable World Congresses of IFAC. Limited seating is available for these first come, first serve events, so please RSVP online if any of them interest you. All special social programs are free of charge. Master to Read Korean in 50 Minutes [Reservation]

Korean alphabet is a very scientific, straightforward system, which allows people to quickly learn to read text in Korean. Invented about 600 years ago, it helped the literacy level soar in Korea. Take advantage of this 50-minute lesson to make your stay in more enjoyable. Light refreshments will be served.

 

Korea's Economic Development in the Post-War Period [Reservation]

After the World War II was over, Korea's GDP per capita was only $100 in 1963. Since then, it soared to a record-breaking $10,000 in 1995 in less than 40 years to a fully developed $25,000 in 2007. With the strong economy, the nation welcomed the inception of democracy in 1987. This lunchtime lecture will be a great opportunity for an overview of how South Korea's economy grew, especially in heavy industry and automotive industry, with the development of today's global companies such as Samsung, Hyundai, POSCO, and LG. Light refreshments will be served.

 

Korean Movie Night [Reservation]

We've rented COEX Megabox for the Congress participants to relax and enjoy a Korean movie. COEX Megabox is one of Asia's biggest movie theatres, with 16 screens and 4,300 seats. The movie selection will be announced in the future.

 

Experience Korean Culture (Paper craft) [Reservation]

Make your own souvenir from during this lunch workshop on paper crafts (hanji art). You will also have an opportunity to try on Hanbok, traditional Korean garments. Heavily using silk, madeup works are used for decoration on wedding gowns, gifts, bookmarks and other applications. Hanji uses paper made from the mulched bark of the Mulberry tree to create boxes, small chests, lanterns, and other artistic items. Light refreshments will be served.

 

Day Trip to Gaeseong, North Korea [Reservation closed ]

Gaeseong, which was the capital of the Goryeo Dynasty (2) and is currently home to a budding industrial complex that is fueling economic cooperation between the two Koreas. About 50 South Korean companies have set up factories in the industrial complex that mainly produces clothing, shoes, industrial parts, cookware and watches. This will be a very unique, precious opportunity to visit one of the countries that still remain close-door (Booking deadline: End of May 2008).

 

- Cost: KRW 258,000 per person (Tour cancelled when fewer than 10 people are signed up); includes lunch, seat-in-coach tour bus, English speaking guide, Admissions as per itinerary.

- Itinerary: Meet a tour guide at COEX (5:00) > Transfer to departure place to Gaeseong > Depart for Imjingak > South & North Korea Immigration Office > Bakyeon Falls & Gwaneumsa Temple > Lunch > Seonjuk Bridge > Goryeo Museum > Gaeseong Industry Zone > South & North Korea Immigration Office (17:30) > Back to COEX (19:30)

Bongeunsa is a very rare temple in Korea because it is situated at the hillside of the city downtown near the COEX preserving and developing Korean traditional culture and artifacts in mid skyscraper with some 1,200 years of the historical background and temple ground.

 

Time: Starts at 2 PM to 4 PM
Location: Bongeun Meditation Center (Temple Stay Information Center)
Participation fee: KRW 10,000

Program: Temple tour, Meditation (Chamseon) and Tea ceremony (Dado)
All programs are conducted in English.

Participants may participate without reservations.

Gather in front of TSIC (Temple Stay Information Center) by 2 PM and follow the instructor.

Walking distance from COEX Convention Center from the Northgate.
All participants will receive a small souvenir.
